On a personal note:
Shannon Wagner is a successful furniture and cabinet-maker and an incurable do-gooder, who has volunteered twice a week since the late-90’s to teach WCCW prisoners how to work with wood. Initially, he brought along complete ignorance about a prison population. As the months passed he came to know hundreds of women, and worked with a mix of maximum and minimum custody inmates forty or so at a time and received from them a mix of responses and possibilities. Some used the time as an excuse for socializing, some wanted to learn a trade, and others hoped to patch family grief by extending a gift. He was not prepared for the degree of reconnecting and self-esteem created by this exercise in wood. Superintendent Stewart is right, “There is a lot of blessing here and there’s a lot of sorrow. It’s all in what the inmate wants to make of the time.”
